Frequency Response

Like speakers, microphones add some flavour to the sound by boosting or cutting certain frequencies. This is due to resonance and resonant frequencies of the microphone - certain frequencies that are naturally reinforced or suppressed by the acoustic properties of the microphone.

We often use equalizers to adjust the shape of the frequency response of a mic to get the sound we like. This can be acheived by selecting a microphone that has a natural shape similar to the sound we are after. In fact if you take a microphone with a flat frequency response graph and run it through a graphic eq, set the eq so it looks like the graph below, you are imitating the sound of the Studio Projects B3 condenser mic.
